Portland International Raceway

Here is a collection of photos that I took at the Portland OHPV meet over Memorial day weekend. OHPV did a super job setting this event up. The PIR facility is fantastic. One of the very first IHPVA events I attended was at this track in 1990.

More complete information on the events and results are available at the OHPV site.

We stayed around long enough to watch the 1 hour time trial. Racing doesn't have the allure it used to for me. Mostly I wanted to see my friends from Rotator.

Thanks once again Mark Mueller of Windwrap for storing my Ryan Vanguard and then bringing it up to the meet for me.

The weather was... interesting. If you don't like it, wait 1/2 an hour.

but you know that right?

In this time trial event, bikes were launched at intervals of 30 seconds and then timed individually. Here are three bikes at the starting line waiting their turn.

Mark Mueller of Eureka California is inside the white streamliner riding a sweet little Greenspeed trike. The bike in the center of the photo is a Rotator Interceptor and in back is a Tour Easy.

There were several of the famous Varna clones present. This black one and also primer grey one. I think the gray one was ridden by Joe Kochanowski.

This would be Joe K's Varna...

Sorry -- I did not play journalist and collect names and statistics on all the bikes and riders. This looks like another Varna body but this one has a large back wheel.

Rotator bikes at the event included the Coyote, a couple Super Sevens, an Interceptor and Steve Delaire in his latest streamliner.

Orrin MacQuarrie builds bikes for Rotator, and he had his own streamliner at this event.

Cool bike... no idea who it is...

No HPV event would be complete without a bunch of Tour Easy bikes, would it? Here they are.

I do believe this is another Joe Kochanowski creation.

John Williams has this outrageous Dutch-built velomobile called a Quest. He's selling advertising space on it to help pay for it. For the TT he had a special protoype head fairing. In the 3rd photo here he's finished his 1 hour and is popping it open. Normally he rides without this.

Philomath is next door to Corvallis... I should really get over there and catch up with John. Or try to... puff puff wheeze...

KettWeisel_trike.jpg

This is a German built trike called a Kett Weisel... unless of course I am entirely wrong. It did NOT race in the TT. There was a practical vehicle event getting set up and I think it was waiting patiently to participate in that event.

Two people discuss the relative merits of pedal versus folding lawn chairs I'd vote for the pedal version any day.
Electrathon.jpg
An Electrathon event was held concurrently with the human powered event. Most of the Electrathon vehicles looked pretty rough. These were two of the cleaner ones. One team came all the way from Hawa'i.
