3.0 LAND VEHICLE COMPETITIONS

3.1 Vehicle Requirements

3.1.1 Power: Vehicles must be driven solely by human power. Non-human power sources (batteries, solar cells, etc.) are permitted only for powering sensors, displays, communication equipment and lights. Control devices, cooling fans, powered aerodynamic devices, etc., may not be powered from non-human sources.

Please list new, recommended verbiage and the reasons why. Hopefully, we can all agree on new wording and present it to the competition committee for review.

Perhaps we want to expand the list of equipment that non-human powered sources can drive. The list of equipment that may not be powered by non-human sources is small, but not limited to the items listed. Perhaps we want to add types of devices to that list. I am all for paragraphs that explain rationale in more detail instead of trying to make rules verbiage so concise that it leaves things out or is not clear. This is why I like sections 1 and 2 of the competition rules. (always keep those sections in mind)

One possible solution to this situation might be the development of of a separate category.

3.0 LAND VEHICLE COMPETITIONS

3.1 Vehicle Requirements

3.1.1(a) Traditional Vehicles : Vehicles must be driven solely by human power. Non-human power sources (batteries, solar cells, etc.) are permitted only for powering sensors, displays, communication equipment and lights. Control devices, cooling fans, powered aerodynamic devices, etc., may not be powered from non-human sources.

3.1.1(b) Unlimited Vehicles: Vehicles must be driven soley by human generated power. On board auxiliary power sources may be used to power any device not directly contributing to the forward momentum of the vehicle. Devices that capture regenerative energy from the forward momentum of the vehicle or store surplus rider energy and then use that stored energy to aid in propulsion of the vehicle are allowed but may not store any energy prior to the start of the timed portion of the event.

Adding the unlimited category would preserve the integrity of the current records and allow fair competition under the existing rules while promoting the development of technology and innovative design to comply with the spirit of human power development as described in the General Rules.

The spirit of these rules is to promote design innovation by establishing only the minimum necessary regulations and to promote the goal of human powered competition
