(from HPV News, May 2002) The votes for the Directors was closed on May 20, 2002. We had 7 vacancies because we didn't have an election last year and one director resigned during 2001. Thee three elected directors with the most votes will serve 2002-2004, the next three will serve the balance of the 2001-2003 term and the seventh electee will serve the balance of 2002. As we had a tie of sixth and seventh votes, with 77 each, we used a coin toss to determine who would serve the 2001 and 2002 terms. Effective May 21, 2002, the current board is:
The HPVA-Board mailing list and the Contacts page on the HPVA websitehave been updated with this information. I'd like to welcome the new directors, thank those who have completed their terms and offer my condolences to the candidates who received the lower vote counts. We had an excellent slate of candidates - possibly the best ever, and it's a pity that we can't accept everyone onto the Board. However, the 2002 year-end elections will be coming around soon. We welcome HPVA members to a new edition and format for HPV News, starting im May, 2002. As we wrote in the last edition, Peter Eland, in York, England is now editing HPV News. Production will continue in the USA and we will mail from California. We especially want to thank Jean Anderson for many years of exemplary work producing HPV News and Human Power. Jean is becoming increasingly active in local bicycling clubs and advocacy groups in California and her workload was becoming overwhelming. We are delighted to welcome Peter to HPV News. I'm sure may HPVA members are familiar with Peter's quarterly Velo Vision, and we're sure we'll see the same quality of his publications carried into HPV News. The HPVA is pleased to announce the formation of a Collection of HPV materials and memorabilia at the Kennedy Library, Cal Poly (California Polytechnic State University), San Luis Obispo, California. Cal Poly continues a long and active association with Human Power, being the site for the development and flight of the record-setting Da Vinci Human Powered Helicopter, the location of Bill Patterson's renowned Single Track engineering HPV class and the home of an active and successful ASME HPV team. Our collection will soon be available to the public. It is currently being catalogued and indexed by library staff and includes historical HPVA publications, books, magazines, event programs and literature, CD's, videotapes, posters, event T-shirts and other memorabilia. We plan to continue building and expanding the collection, to make it a world-class source of human power reference materials. We are investigating the opportunities also and starting some discussions for building a collection of historic and significant human powered vehicles. This is in the very early stages, so please stay tuned. We are also pleased to announce the formation of an HPVA Hall of Fame. Initially, it will be a virtual hall on the HPVA website, but may be expanded within the Collection described above, in due course. We expect the Hall to include people who have made significant achievements and contributions to human powered transportation and in furthering its cause. The first induction took place at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge, Battle Mountain, Nevada in October 2001. The inductees were Georgi Georgiev, Gardner Martin and Freddie Markham. We'll post information on the HPVA website, as it becomes available. The HPVA is looking for new Memebrship administrator. Shay James is currently filling this role, but her availability is becoming very limited due to relocation and expansion of the family bicycle shop other commitments. We're looking for someone who has a PC or Macintosh with e-mail access and is comfortable using a PC database system. We'd prefer someone who is easily accessible by e-mail, telephone and postal mail from San Luis Obispo, California. If you are interested, or would like to volunteer, please contact me with any questions - president@ihpva.org. The British are coming? Now that Peter Eland is Editor of HPV News, we increase the British influence on the HPVA. Two of our Vice Presidents live in London - Chris Roper (Air) and Andrea Casalotti (Workbikes). Personally, I still carry a British passport, but have resided in the USA since the late 1960's. I'm not suggesting that North American HPVA members should start riding on the left or drink warm beer, but please excuse us if we occasionally lapse into Queen's English. -- Chris Broome, May 2002 |
