European HPV Championships 1993 in Farum, Denmark.

Fortunately, Championships are not solely about races. Above all, they consitute a major opportunity for participants and onlookers alike to acquaint themselves with new constructions, and test- ride as many of them as possible. This particular short- wheelbase cycle has been made by Werner Stiffel of Karlsruhe, Germany, a well- known recumbent builder and former president of the German HPV Association.
I called it a "cycle for the armchair cyclist" because of its generous  amount of rear suspension. Indeed, just sitting down on the seat of it "tells one" indirectly, that this is one very comfortable bike. All of Stiffel's bikes, that I've tried to date, have been nicely suspended using some kind of automotive- grade foam core usually found (if not recycled from) car shock- dampers.
In this particular bike the suspension element is under the seat, in parallell with the frame, and pushing against an arm leading straight up from the swinging rear triangle. I really must say, that of all potential solutions for providing rear suspension on an SWB recumbent to date, this one appeals especially to me because of its unusual, out- of- sight and space- saving, potential, all of which makes it a viable option for using in a foldable recumbent.
I wish Werner Stiffel would develop this model further to make it into a Foldabenttm

After all, what good is a recumbent, if I cannot take it with me everywhere I go?
