European HPV Championships 1993 in Farum, Denmark.

Start of a major Championships- event road race in Farum. That's when the faired bikes are able to show their advantages: compared to other bikes they're like streamlined speed sharks in the surrounding sea of invisible, yet resistant, air. This race, 3 laps of 22 km each in varied, through fairly flat terrain (Denmark isn't exactly known as a heaven for mountain bikes ;-)) was won by Mike Burrows in the indescribably- brownish- color Kevlar Speedy #1 at lower right- hand corner (i.e. a faired Widcheetah trike of his own design). His median speed over the 66 km course was in excess of 48.5 km/h. . . that's an hour and twentysomething minutes of vigorous pounding on the pedals, and damn the human torpedos bearing down on one!
Nobody, who has ever seen Mike in action can fail to appreciate the importance of having a minutely- adjusted and -customized vehicle, as his racing Speedy obviously is set up for him. Then again, Mike's kind of special. . . legend has it, that his usual training method is to set road speed records between Norwich in Nordfolk, where he lives, and every single other labeled place in the UK within a pedal- there- and- back- after- hours distance. A couple of times a week all year round. It could  be just an urban legend, but on the strength of available evidence, I really don't think so.
