Roulandt, Chinkara, and Flevo, three Dutch recumbents.
This in every sense of the word, and no
two words about it

Chinkara recumbent is an attempt at a building of
a better, streamlined Flevobike. Both are front-
wheel driven, mid- steered, fully- suspended bikes, that require
certain talent and dedication to learn how to ride
them.
Unlike other
bicycles, upright or recumbent, where a handlebar plays an
important role in steering and maintaining balance, the
Flevo and the Chinkara are controlled by
minute shifts in the center of
gravity; effectively by counterbalancing the mass of the free-
swinging front part with one's feet, by instinctive
shifting of the body in the seat. Assuming that one posseses
that instinct to begin with, of course.
While it may sound
logic and easy in principle, in practice riding either has more to
do with flying an airplane, than with sitting astride
a traditional, stiff- frame (i.e. fast "vertical reference
plane") bike. My opinions on the Flevo are perhaps best
explained in this article, which
I wrote recently for the HPV mailing
list.
